Vandplanter renser flodvand for antibiotika

I en nylig undersøgelse publiceret i 2024 har forskere fra Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture ved University of São Paulo undersøgt, hvordan forurening påvirker vandmiljøet.

Studiet fokuserer på Piracicaba-floden i Brasilien og undersøger specifikke botaniske løsninger på et voksende miljøproblem.

Forskerne har analyseret, hvorvidt vandbregnen Salvinia auriculata kan anvendes som et filter mod skadelige stoffer.

Botaniske løsninger fungerer i praksis som en biologisk støvsuger, der suger urenheder op gennem rodnettet.

Forskningen er offentliggjort i tidsskriftet Environmental Sciences Europe og trækker på omfattende miljøovervågning.

Vandbregnens effektivitet blev testet over for farmaceutiske stoffer, som ophobes i både sediment og dyreliv.

Holdet bag projektet, ledet af Patrícia Alexandre Evangelista, opdagede betydelige variationer i forureningsgraden.

Om de sæsonbestemte udsving i vandet udtaler Evangelista: “The results showed a clear pattern of seasonality. During the rainy season, most antibiotics had concentrations below detection limits. In the dry season, however, when water volume decreases and contaminants become concentrated, different compounds were detected.”

Ud over vandprøverne analyserede forskerne også, hvordan stofferne akkumulerede i lokale fiskearter.

Her fandt de rester af kloramfenikol, som er forbudt at bruge i landbruget i mange lande.

Om fundet bemærker Evangelista: “One of the most significant findings of the study was the detection of chloramphenicol in lambari fish (Astyanax sp.) collected from local fishermen in the Barra Bonita region. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic whose use in livestock is prohibited in Brazil precisely because of the risks associated with its toxicity.”

Holdet gennemførte derefter laboratorieforsøg med Salvinia auriculata for at afdække dens evne til fytoremediering.

De fokuserede på specifikke markørstoffer på grund af deres relevans for miljø og sundhed.

“Enrofloxacin is widely used in animal husbandry, including aquaculture, as well as in human medicine. Chloramphenicol, on the other hand, is still used in humans despite being banned for food-producing animals and serves as a historical marker of persistent contamination,” she explains.

Planteeksperimenterne benyttede kulstof-14-mærkede forbindelser til at spore kemikaliernes rejse gennem vand, rødder og blade.

Vandbregnen viste sig at være yderst effektiv til at reducere visse typer af kemikalier.

Forskellen på de forskellige stoffers nedbrydningstid var dog markant.

Om plantens konkrete indsats rapporterer Evangelista: “The results showed the high efficiency of Salvinia in removing enrofloxacin. In treatments with higher plant biomass, more than 95% of the antibiotic was removed from the water within a few days. The half-life of the compound dropped to about two to three days. In the case of chloramphenicol, removal was slower and partial.”

Forskeren tilføjer uddybende om det langsommere nedbrydningsforløb for kloramfenikol i det undersøgte økosystem.

“The plant was able to remove 30% to 45% of the antibiotic from the water, with half-lives ranging from 16 to 20 days, indicating the greater persistence of the compound in the environment.”

På trods af plantens evne til at rense vandet, afslørede forsøgene nogle uventede effekter i interaktionen mellem plante, vand og dyreliv.

Da koncentrationen af kloramfenikol i fiskene forblev høj på trods af plantens filtrering, kan det logisk udledes, at selv minimale niveauer af persistente kemikalier er tilstrækkelige til at forårsage langsigtet bioakkumulering.

Vandplanternes tilstedeværelse viste sig i visse tilfælde at ændre den kemiske struktur af stofferne.

Evangelista bemærker følgende om plantens komplekse påvirkning af miljøet og fiskenes optagelsesmekanismer.

“This shows that using plants as ‘sponges’ for contaminants is not a trivial matter. The presence of the macrophyte changes the entire system, including the way the organism comes into contact with the contaminant.”

Plantens indflydelse på fiskenes genetiske sundhed varierede betydeligt afhængigt af den præcise kemiske eksponering.

I miljøer med kloramfenikol hjalp bregnen med at reducere DNA-skader, muligvis via antioxidanter fra rodzonen.

“The interpretation we propose is that, in the case of chloramphenicol, the plant may generate fewer genotoxic byproducts or release antioxidant compounds into the rhizosphere, reducing oxidative stress in the fish. On the other hand, enrofloxacin is chemically more stable and may produce persistent and potentially toxic metabolites whose action is not neutralized by the macrophyte,” the researcher comments.

Mens akvatiske planter tilbyder et stort potentiale for at afhjælpe miljøproblemer, kræver metoden omhyggelig forvaltning.

Den forurenede plantebiomasse skal fjernes korrekt, for at de optagne stoffer ikke frigives til naturen igen.

“The study shows that the problem is real, measurable, and complex. And any strategy to address it must consider not only the removal of the contaminant, but also its biological and ecological effects,” the researcher concludes.

Forskningen understreger værdien af botanisk videnskab i kampen mod moderne miljøudfordringer.

“The detection of antibiotic residues in the water, sediments, and fish of the Piracicaba River shows just how harmful human activities can be. The resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics can lead to the emergence of superbugs in the environment,” adds Valdemar Luiz Tornisielo.

“The research yielded positive results with low-cost environmental solutions and enabled a better understanding of the integrated functioning of aquatic ecosystems and the use of effective natural techniques for impact mitigation.”
